In 2008 our parents expressed a desire to become more self sufficient, we already had chickens and had raised sheep for many years, we also had a few horses and a hay field. They knew they wanted some sort of milk cow, but they weren't sure what to get. Mary was gung-ho about the idea and wanted to take them on, in hearing this I was also interested. Mary was adamant that she wanted to be responsible for them. However my mom didn't want her 9 and 11 year old trying to control a huge Holstein or Jersey, and she didn't want the amount of milk that those cows would produce.
